Where Can I Serve?

Jesus told us, his disciples, to make disciples of all nations. One of the most important values of River of Life is our mission to the world. It begins in our own community, and spreads overseas to every nation. There are opportunities to serve in various ways each Sunday morning in addition to a variety of local and global mission projects throughout the year.

Music Ministry

God-honouring worship is something we strive for. Many church members get involved in our music ministry. Some play their instruments, while others are vocalists.  These volunteers are an important part of the ministry at River of Life, using their talents and gifts to glorify God.

Greeters & Ushers

Greeters fill an important role at River of Life.  They are the friendly faces that will greet you as you walk in the door and answer questions or direct you to someone who can.  The greeter and usher team is a servant-hearted group of men and women whose ministry is integral to church life.

Media & Technology

In an age of widespread technology, River of Life recognizes this is also an area of service.  A team of volunteers use their gifts and abilities to serve in sound, audio recording and powerpoint.  All of our weekly sermons are uploaded to our website in audio format.

Prayer Team

Prayer cannot be overestimated. Prayer moves the hand of God. River of Life has a team of believers who are committed to prayer.  Each Sunday, a group meets at 9:45 to pray for the service.  Anyone and everyone is invited to join this group in the second floor classroom. There is also a Prayer Team available to pray with you after each Sunday morning service. Throughout the week, River of Life has an effective prayer chain in place to pray for urgent and special prayer requests that arise.  Please call the church office or one of our pastors to place an item on the prayer list.

River of Life has been blessed with many children!  LIFE Kids is a ministry for children, ages 2 to grade 6, on Sunday mornings.  Children spend the first half hour in the service for a multi-generational worship time.  At 10:30, they are dismissed to have their own time of worship, learning God’s Word in both a large and small group setting.  Due to the many volunteers we need to run this program, we currently offer this ministry 3 of the 4 Sundays a month during the school year.  This summer, we are able to continue offering a preschool program during the service for ages 2-4.

Global Mission Outreach

River of Life is a community of believers who have a heart and passion to be a part of spreading God’s kingdom around the world. We are active in supporting missionaries with our money and with our prayers. We have focused our global missions in three areas: Brazil, Ukraine and Mexico.

River of Life has committed to support a church in Picarras, Brazil, which several members of our congregation call “home.”  In Spring of 2011, we sent a team of families to Picarras to show our support and to encourage the local pastor and congregation, in addition to serving the community. A second team is already meeting to plan another outreach in 2013.  Check out the Picarras Church Blog!

With a Mennonite heritage in our church’s history, our congregation has deep roots in Ukraine.  Over the last few years, we have teamed up with local organization, Hungry For Life, to send teams to Nikopol, Ukraine.  The mission has focused on serving widows and orphans.

Every second year, Pastor Darren takes a team of our youth to Vicente Guerrero, Mexico. We partner with Heart Ministries and are commissioned to build a house for a family in need. Please pray for God’s leading as He starts to choose the team for July of 2014.

Local Mission Projects

River of Life also responds to the immediate needs of our local community.  As a church, we financially and prayerfully support these organizations.  There are also opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ and serve alongside these organizations.

Mennonite Central Committee is an agency that provides ‘relief, development and peace in the name of Christ’. Our involvement includes making blankets, volunteering at Thrift Stores and helping with fundraising events.

Ruth & Naomi’s is an inner city ministry in Chilliwack. We provide one meal a month and serve it at Ruth & Naomi’s. Our kitchen is certified, so some of the food is prepared by a group at church while another group does the serving and cleanup. This needs about eight volunteers.

Teen Challenge is a faith based residential program for young men and women, ages 19 and over, who are trapped in life controlling addictions. We invite them in for information and to lead us in Worship and support them in preaching, prayer and through sponsorship.

Columbia Bible College prepares people for a life of discipleship, service and ministry. We provide prayer and financial support, and invite them for information and to lead Worship on a yearly basis.
